Update 12/28:

Add another car prowl on Tuesday morning, Dec. 21, in the 10500 block of Fifth Avenue Northeast. Police also report a methamphetamine sale that night at a residence in the 200 block of Northeast 91st Street.

Sad but true.

On Christmas Day, at one in the afternoon, somebody stole a car from the 9000 block of 15th Avenue Northeast, according to police reports.

But most of the holiday action seems to have occurred on Christmas Eve eve.

On Thursday night, Dec. 23, a truck was stolen from the 800 block of Northeast 82nd Street, and another car there was broken into. A second car was stolen that night from the 7700 block of Second Avenue Northeast, and a third from the 9800 block of 15th Avenue Northeast.

Early that morning, Dec. 23,  burglars forced their way into a home in the 8000 block of 15th Avenue Northeast.

More recently – early this morning, Dec. 27 – a car was prowled in the 500 block of Northeast Northgate Way.

And on Wednesday night, Dec. 22, a car was broken into in the 9600 block of 12th Avenue Northeast and two more were prowled in the 300 block of Northeast Northgate Way.

  1. Is this level of car theft activity unusual, or is it seeming like an epidemic simply because this blog is announcing them all? I really don’t know.

Thanks for making us more aware, though.

  2. To Jon K,

I would also guess the number of cars broken into with alarms is low. We have two cars, one that was broken into about three weeks ago. Both cars were parked right next to each other on the street but mine has an alarm and my wife’s does not. They broke into my wife’s and left mine all alone.

  3. Plenty of real time car tracking technology out there. Check this link:
    http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/realtime-gpstrackingsystem.html

A simple security camera setup in a window will at least allow you to see ‘when’ and possibly ‘who’

Also look at the super inexpensive older x10 stuff. I put a $10 x10 motion detector in my car that turns on a bedroom light in my house…

I wonder how many of the broken into/stolen cars had car alarms? I’d think it would be low. Car Toys will install a fake LED light that looks like an alarm but will deter most thieves. They’re looking for easy (unless you drive a Lambo)

I’m a computer guy that lives in Mapleleaf – anyone needing assistance for a fair price in the neighborhood can feel free to contact me for help in implementing an internet enabled security system or cameras.

  4. If only surveillance cameras & all that stuff were inexpensive & easy to install….. God I hope they catch these jerks soon.. this is getting ridiculous!!

  5. The density of car thefts is so high you’d think the police could catch someone in the act simply by hanging out in an unmarked car on nearly any street…
