In an effort to help welcome two new homeless camps to the Northeast Seattle community, students at  St. Catherine of Siena Parish School, 8524 Eighth Ave. N.E., decorated more than 300 bags that community members helped fill with food on Wednesday night.

Volunteers today are passing out the food bags, along with more than 400 blankets that students have gathered, and wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to members of Nickelsville, which recently moved to a former Lake City fire station at 2806 N.E. 127th St. They also plan to visit Tent City 3, which now is located at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill, but will be relocating Saturday to Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, located at 10005 32nd Ave. N.E. in nearby Meadowbrook.

You can read more about the effort on KPLU, and a big thank you to Renee Staton and George Allen for all of their organization efforts.

  1. To quote Nickelsville resident Richard D from the Seattle Times on the Sodo location:

“We want to be where people will be able to see us,” he said. “Then that way they can see that homelessness is not going away.”

Do you folks think this is about actually getting these people off the streets and into housing? Sodo is the best location: out of sight. Nickelsville will melt away once they realize the media won’t come watch their antics and neighbors aren’t being forced to accept bums in the neighborhoods. Then we can get back to helping those who want to be helped and are willing to follow rules and supervision as pre-requisites to getting housing.

  2. “There but for the Grace of God go many of us”

Well, the grace of god plus a few beers short of a dilvery truck load….plus not having any friends or family willing to put you up….. for whatever reason I can’t imagine….

Enjoy the circus. Enjoy SHARE treasurer and Nickelsville Maitre d’ Leo Rhodes, living in a tent for over 20 years.

  3. I hope that Mapleleafist is never in the position
the people in Nickelsville and Tent City 3 find
themselves in. The political circus was started
by former Mayor Nickels. He considers the
homeless a blight on the community. There but
for the Grace of God go many of us. I’ve always considered Mapleleaf a neighbor and would try to help out people in need there as well as those in my own neighborhood. Renee, may God Bless you in so many ways for leading all of us in Pinehurst and Mapleleaf to bring help to so many souls in their time of need.
