Cafe Kopi opens with same scones as Sugar Shack

The Sugar Shack Baking Co. may have a new name and owner, but fans of the Maple Leaf cafe’s much beloved scones and other baked goods, never fear. The owner of what now is known as Cafe Kopi reassures you that she has kept the same baker on board and will be sure to continue offering your favorite items.

“We’re trying to keep what people want,” said new owner Fery Sutanto, pictured above. “Usually if people make a request, we just make it.”

Sutanto says she bought the cafe, located at 8056 Lake City Way, in mid-June, but she only last week painted the new name of Cafe Kopi on the windows facing the busy intersection of Lake City Way and 15th Avenue Northeast. But it’s a work in progress, and she hopes to soon have a permanent sign that will be more visible.

As for the new name, Sutanto says she originally is from the Indonesian island of Java, and that in Indonesian, Kopi means coffee. But there’s plenty to drink besides coffee, including fresh juices and smoothies.

Sutanto has some more changes planned for the cafe, as well, including an expansion of the menu, which includes weekend brunch items such as biscuits and gravy and the “Shack Attack”; daily breakfasts including prepared bagels and oatmeal; and rice bowls, which today were listed as Coconut Curry, Hawaiian and Pesto. Sutanto added that there likely will be more rice bowl flavors soon, and that she also would like to include some salads to the menu.

For now, hours also are the same as when it was the Sugar Shack: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. But that, too, could change.

By the way, since Cafe Kopi has stayed so similar, we left its ratings under our Food & Drink section that readers had given to the Sugar Shack. Feel free to change your rating, and everyone else is of course invited to rate our Maple Leaf eateries away.

  1. What a cool place to hang out. I like the friendly environment so cozy. I like the scones especially with a shot of espresso. Well since they don’t offer kopi luwak which is awfully from droplets of raccons, I prefers just regular coffee then. Keep up the good works.
