The doors to Maple Leaf’s Early Masters art school opened at 12:30 p.m. sharp Wednesday and more than a dozen parents and friends crammed into a small upstairs gallery to see what the summer camp on “Understanding Frida” had produced.
It’s been 56 years since she died, but Frida Kahlo’s work has inspired millions and reproductions of her work can be found over everything from mouse pads to lunch boxes. And to think she was all but ignored as a serious artist during her lifetime!
Then it was a students vs. parents duel to see who knew the most about Frida, her art and her husband, Diego Rivera.
Art teacher Shelley Thomas, who has studied art history at Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has taught art and art history in Seattle’s private and public schools, threw out a rapid stream of trivia questions. The discussion ranged from Frida and Diego’s marriage to her health to how she made art.
This summer’s camps on Greek artists, Vincent van Gogh and the Impressionists are over, and the remaining camps – American Artists and Pablo Picasso – are sold out.
UPDATE: Shelley sent us photos:
What a fabulous time must have been had by all!! And how great that Maple Leaf Life covered it!!
