Celebrate North Seattle and more this weekend

Maple Leafers likely don’t cross the freeway as often to go to AMC Loews Oak Tree Cinemas now that Thornton Place Stadium is open, but Celebrate North Seattle aims to help you learn more about many of the other businesses in Oak Tree Village and along the nearby stretch of the Aurora corridor.

The free community block party, which takes place from 2-6 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Oak Tree Cinemas, 10006 Aurora Ave. N., will feature entertainment for the whole family including music from Sid Law, inflatables, children’s games and food. In addition, door prizes and gift bags will be provided by a variety of local businesses and community groups.

“This is just about getting to know each other so that we can build a flourishing community,” said event spokesperson Casey Ties, a member of Epic Life Church, which is one of the three main sponsors of the event. “It’s a really simple concept of knowing who our neighbors are and seeing the good that’s in North Seattle and seeing the good that’s along Aurora.”

Other main sponsors of the inaugural event are Oak Tree Cinemas and Northwest Face, but Ties said about 10 smaller businesses also are sponsors and will have tables at the block party to help you learn more about them.

What else is going on this weekend?

  • Also on Sunday, bicycling group Spokespeople is leading a bike ride from Northgate Mall to Ben & Jerry’s at Green Lake. Meet at 1 p.m. at the south end of Northgate Mall from Northeast 103rd Street, or give ride leader Cindy Riskin a call at 206-817-0746.
  • In the mood for a marching band? Then according to our neighboring Ravenna Blog, this is your lucky weekend. Starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, the 100-plus-member Roosevelt High School marching band will parade through the Roosevelt neighborhood, finishing with a miniconcert about 2:30 p.m. at Roosevelt Square.
  • Learn more about the new Lake City Fire Station 39, 2806 N.E. 127th St., at its dedication ceremony from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Mayor Mike McGinn will be in attendance, and Jason Huff with the Mayor’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs will discuss the station’s new sculpture at the event.
  • Keep your business attire on after work tonight and head to the Fremont 5K and Briefcase Relay, which  begins at 6 p.m. The event benefits the FamilyWorks food bank and Solid Ground. For more information, check out our partner Fremont Universe.
  • And there’s another zany run this weekend: the June Pub Run, which will involve about 100 participants wearing Hawaiian attire running from South Lake Union starting at noon and ending around 5 p.m. in Ballard with stops at seven pubs along the way. Read more about the event from our partner MyBallard or on the Pub Run Facebook page.
  • Those pub runners will be arriving in the neighborhood  just in time for the Ballard ArtWalk, from 6-9 p.m. Saturday (view map here), where MyBallard says you also can meet artsy couple Chris Ballew, singer of The Presidents of the United States of America, and artist Kate Endle, who creates patchwork collages.
  • If you’re not art-walked out for the weekend, tonight is Phinney-Greenwood’s Art Up Artwalk from 6-9. Our partner PhinneyWood has more on the event.
  • And before you make any plans, remember that the downtown Seattle transit tunnel is closed Saturday and Sunday for engineering work. All Metro tunnel bus routes will use surface streets this weekend, and Sound Transit will be providing a free bus shuttle between Westlake Station and the Sodo Station.
