There are plenty of Easter-themed activities in around Maple Leaf this weekend, including the annual Bunny Sock Hop at Northgate Community Center tonight at 6:30 and the Carnival of Eggs from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Lakeview Free Methodist Church.

But it’s not just about Easter this weekend. Check out some other area events:

  • Put on your dancing shoes get ready to do the fox trot, waltz, jitterbug and more at the first-Friday Ballroom Dancing session at Northgate Community Center, 10510 Fifth Ave. N.E., from 1-2 p.m. today. The Bonnie Birch Band performs. For more information, call 386-4283.
  • Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Youth Appreciation Week comes to a close from 7-10 tonight with an Open Mic at Meadowbrook Community Center, 10517 35th Ave. N.E. Ages 11 to 18 are invited to share your poetry, singing and karaoke skills at the event.
  • You just might have time after the area egg hunts to squeeze in a visit to the Northgate Community Center to see storyteller Eve Abram’s “Fun-tastic Folktales: African & African-American Folktales” from 11 a.m. to noon. The native of New Orleans and graduate of the University of Washington uses stories such as “The King of the Birds,” “Katchie Katchie Blue Jay” and “How Animals got their Coats” to explore where stories come from, why we tell them, and how tone of voice, gestures and body language heighten storytelling impact. Children learn how they can teach kindness, respect, fairness, sharing and other lessons, and are encouraged to try it for themselves.
  • Also Saturday, families are invited to help the Children’s Garden at Magnuson Park grow at a Family Gardening-Workparty. Adults who participate are invited to bring children with them for free nature activities, such as exploring the worm bin, going on sensory walks, creating nature art, planting and harvesting. Refreshments, tools and gloves will be provided. As an added bonus, King County Master Gardeners and other horticultural experts will be available to answer questions about your own garden.
  • And if you’re heading to tomorrow’s Seattle Sounders FC game against New York, remember that there’s a shuttle available at the Northgate Transit Center. The buses will begin picking up passengers at 5:30 p.m., so get there early if you want time to wander Qwest Field before the match.
  • Now that it’s April, it’s also time for the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. We know the weather may not be the most welcoming, but isn’t that part of the fun? Just make sure you wear your rain boots.
