Update: Old Spaghetti House site gets a coffee shack

May 11th, 2012 by Mike

The Italian Spaghetti House & Pizzeria is still closed, but there’s life in its parking lot.

Our neighbors to the north-northeast, the Victory Heights Blog, caught this crew in action as a new Espresso stand went up at the old restaurant site at 9824 Lake City Way.

Headrush Coffee hopes to be open for business by June 1st said owner Zach Head, who will run the stand along with his brother. The free-standing building won’t need any plumbing and will tap electricity directly from the main power line.

The Victory Heights report is here.

Snappy Dragon a readers' favorite

August 11th, 2011 by Mike

We’d overlooked this kudo in the annual Seattle Weekly “best of” awards, but it’s hard to miss the sign outside Judy Fu’s Snappy Dragon.

It was readers of the Weekly that brought the Snappy, at 8917 Roosevelt Way N.E., the reward.

A full list of readers’ choices is here. Note that Ace Hardware was named “best hardware store,” no specific location given. And that Wine World Warehouse, just down Interstate 5 in Wallingford, gets the nod for best wine store.

Marie Callender's at Northgate unexpectedly closed – for good

June 13th, 2011 by Mike

Update: Customers arriving at Marie Callender’s are reduced to leaving notes stuck by the door to tell friends where to meet them: “Gone to Wedgwood Broiler.”

———————————————-

Marie Callender’s restaurant at Northgate shut its doors – for good – Sunday.

The restaurant, at 9538 First Ave N.E., is one of several in Washington state that closed abruptly on orders from corporate management.

According to  a report from q13FOX.com, a family birthday party was interrupted Sunday afternoon when they were told to leave: “We thought, ‘Why didn’t they wait until the end of the day?’ ” KOMO-TV has a similar report here.

MarketWatch is reporting that Marie Callender’s filed for bankruptcy today and has launched  a store-reduction program to close 65 of its company-owned restaurants.

More news about proposed strip club

June 1st, 2011 by Mike

Update June 2: KIRO has a story on ownership of the new club. Also, the club has a Facebook page.

Since Maple Leaf Life intern Katie Melton first reported on plans to turn the Seven Seas restaurant into a strip club, other news organizations have picked up the story.

Since our report at the start of the Memorial Day weekend, KIRO and KOMO television stations and The Stranger newspaper have all featured the business at 8914 Lake City Way N.E. (The Seattle Times linked to Katie’s story.)

KOMO’s report, Plans for new strip club irks Maple Leaf-Wedgwood residents, talks with Lee Grogg, director of Ryther Child Center: “We frankly have concerns about the traffic it brings into the neighborhood. (We are) close enough by, that I think that’s a real concern.”

KIRO’s story, “Maple Leaf Restaurant Closing to Make Space For Strip Club, ” puts a name to the new business: Pandora’s Adult Cabaret.

And The Stranger’s story is written with that publication’s satirical twist: “Strip Club Threatens to Plunge Lake City Way into Seediness.”

Old Country Fair & Chili Cook-Off canceled

October 14th, 2010 by master

The fifth annual Old Country Fair & Chili Cook-Off scheduled for this Saturday at Northgate Community Center has been canceled, said Pati Maxwell, coordinator of the community center.

“We only had five vendors and that’s not enough to have a successful country fair,” she said.

But those vendors will get another chance to showcase their wares to the neighborhood and are expected to participate in the annual Northgate Flea Market, which will be billed as a Flea Market and Craft Fair in the spring.

Maxwell says the economy is likely to blame, so in better times let’s hope the event returns, especially since the chef from the Seattle Athletic Club was to be among the competitors in the chili cook-off.

“It was one of our first special events when we opened,” Maxwell added.

Imagine it – a Dick's Drive-In in Maple Leaf?

September 21st, 2010 by Mike

Our partner site My Wallingford reports that famous Seattle restaurant Dick’s Drive-In is coming … well, to a new location somewhere in north Seattle.

Dick’s will open its first drive-in burger-and-shake spot in 36 years somewhere to the north of its original location in Wallingford (at 111 N.E. 45th St.), our news partner The Seattle Times reports.

Dick’s Drive-In Restaurants will focus its search for a new restaurant location within a 20-mile area north of the original Dick’s in Wallingford, the company announced Monday.

The decision comes after an online poll asked customers whether a new restaurant should be north, south, or east of the Wallingford location. More than 53,000 people voted for a northern location, stealing 46 percent of the total votes, according to a news release from the company. More than 115,000 votes were cast.

“This is an historic time for our family’s small business,” says Jim Spady, the company’s vice president, in a news release. “The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and humbling.”

He said that if the new northern Dick’s is a success, the next two Dick’s would be in the South and East regions.

Spady hopes the new restaurant will be open by late 2011 or early 2012. It will be the first that’s been built in the last 36 years.

One of the Maple Leaf Life editors, however, points out that our neighborhood is in between Dick’s Wallingford and Lake City locations, making it less likely we’ll get the new site.
