Shots fired here just after midnight near N.E. 94th?

Two neighbors have emailed they thought they heard shots very early this morning.

One reports this from shortly after midnight: “Did anyone hear two loud bangs or gun shots, followed by sirens last night? Around Northeast 95th Street and First Avenue Northeast.”

The other report:

Last night, maybe at 12:15 a.m. I was drifting off to sleep (we live about halfway down on Northeast 94th Street off of Fifth Avenue Northeast where it dead-ends) and heard what sounded for all the world like a shotgun going off. After a short pause, another blast.

About five seconds later, a car peeling out, and that sounded a couple blocks away. After about three minutes, police sirens. Any idea what may have happened in our hood?

Not so far. Neither the police reports map nor the police and fire incident report map show any activity.

However, the real-time 911 website shows 16 fire units dispatched to First Avenue Northeast and N.E 94th about a quarter past midnight for a fire in a building.

  1. I’ve definitely been starting to hear fireworks at night in the 11pm-12:30pm range. People are starting early this year! I grew up with both guns and fireworks, so it’s easy for me to tell the difference. Generally this time of year it’s going to be fireworks, you might want to hold off on calling 911. Listen for the crackles after the boom that Ken mentions.

  2. It was fireworks, complete with the crackling finishes. It was not much like real gunfire. The same happened in the middle of the night Memorial Day.

  3. We heard it too and called it in. Dispatcher said a patrol in the area responded and believed it was fireworks. There is a nuisance report at 12:18am around 94th and 8th Ave NE on the 911 map.
    Thanks, Jackie. – MLL
