“Suspicious teenage boys” reported in Maple Leaf today

In an email this afternoon Carrie reported seeing two teen boys going door-to-door in Maple Leaf , allegedly seeking a futon seller from craigslist.

“I went onto Maple Leaf Life to see if anything about this has been reported yet but don’t see anything there. You may want to share it with others in the neighborhood.”

From time to time – and particularly in good weather – we get various types of solicitors. There’s advice on how to hand them in this post from May 2012.

Here’s Carrie’s report from late this afternoon:

I live on Northeast 95th Street between 15th and 17th avenues northeast. There were two suspicious teenage boys on my street today knocking on doors under the premise that they were looking for someone selling a futon chair on Craigslist.

One came to my door, then together they went to two of my neighbors’ houses across the street, then the second one came to my door (I did not open it and told him to go away) and then they continued down the street going to more houses.

Shortly afterwards I saw a police cruiser two doors up but by the time I went outside it was gone and I do not know if the police were there due to a call from a neighbor about the teens or for some other reason.

The unfortunate thing is that shortly after the police cruiser left I saw the two boys headed west on 95th  between 15th towards 12th. I am very suspicious they were looking for homes whose occupants are out of town for the long weekend. One boy had brown hair and was wearing a red hoodie and the other had blonde hair and was wearing a dark blue short-sleeved t-shirt.

  1. Chuckle. I guess turnabout is fair play. If you take their picture they take yours. But seriously, these are minors and you cannot post pictures of them w/out parental consent. What do you intend to do with the pictures you take of them folks? Who is the grown up here?

  2. We have raised our kids to not break into houses, not to steal, and not to attack people. Anyone with kids that didn’t teach them this stuff?

  3. I like the idea of snapping a shot of the visitors, but I think opening the door for anyone you don’t know is risky. But then I live downhill in that rough area called Northgate. 🙂

  4. I agree with Sue. Is every kid now branded a stalker, or ‘scoping’ just because they are knocking on a couple of doors? Really? I think it is wise to be aware and pay attention to neighborhood activities, but the comments above seem a bit paranoid to me.

  5. There are a couple futons listed in craigslist in Maple Leaf. Agreed the door to door thing is odd. As a mom of two teens don’t shoot then ask questions later.

  6. M, glad to hear your wife called and the police were on our street for that reason. I suspected as much, since we don’t often have police cruisers on our block. Do you know if the police ever found the boys? I saw them shortly after the police left.

George, good suggestion. I didn’t answer the door with cell phone in hand, but I was headed out to try to find the boys and get a photo when I saw the police up the block.

  7. Definitely call 911 and tell the cops about any interactions or observations along these lines. They’re obviously scoping, and the police will likely want to talk to them and ID them and, who knows, maybe they’re already wanted or there are warrants out.
