If you’re wondering how construction for the light rail station coming to Northgate will impact Maple Leaf residents in the next few years, you may have already noticed it beginning with utility work on First Avenue Northeast.

Sound Transit recently announced that utility work was set to begin in early March to relocate overhead power lines and poles where the trains will exit the underground tunnel in their approach to Northgate Station.

Power lines and poles on First Avenue, between Northeast 92nd and 97 streets, will be moved from west side of the street to the east side to accommodate the portal at Northeast 94th Street and First Avenue Northeast.

That work is expected to be completed by July.

  1. @An Observer, According to your post they are adding sidewalks to Northgate. Not Maple Leaf.

Adding sidewalks is pointless; it will not make the walk to the station any easier and thus would be a huge waste of money.

  2. Sound Transit will not be installing curbs or sidewalks on any streets east of 5th NE, even though they are supposed to install pedestrian improvements within a one mile circumference of it’s Transit Centers. They are going to put $5,000,000 into a pedestrian bridge over Interstate Five, but they won’t improve the infrastructure of the neighborhood that is hosting their new light rail station? We are getting the railroad, for sure. The City won’t improve these streets either, crying poor mouth. Thanks for nuthin’. Northgate is a Designated Urban Center and generates tremendous tax revenue for the City and the State, let’s have some of that spent here, please.

Forget the pedestrian bridge, let them walk to the train using NE 92nd or Northgate Way. Put the money into pedestrian infrastructure east of 5th NE, all the way to and including 15th NE.
