Attempted home break-in overnight, other crimes

Jennifer emails that somebody tried to break into her home overnight at Northeast 100th Street and 15th Avenue Northeast.

“My fiancé and I went to bed at around 10 p.m. and woke up to the sound of someone attempting to break into our house on the front porch,” she writes.

They called 911 but the person apparently heard and ran off. “If anyone noticed anything strange or out of the blue last night please let me know so I can finish filling out the police report. Thank you.”

We also got an email about car vandalism last week from Stefan, who lives at 15th and Northeast 85th Street.

We came out to our car this morning to find the driver’s side mirror was smashed, the plastic casing about 15 feet in front of the car. Doesn’t look like there was damage to the rest of the car/doors, although there might be a smudge on one of the windows. So either we were sideswiped just enough to do the mirror, or someone drove by with a bat and intentionally smashed us.

He was also the victim of a break-in about a month and a half ago.

We’re renting and feeling pretty demoralized about Maple Leaf right now. What’s going on, this is supposed to be a nice quiet neighborhood, right? Drive-by shootings, theft, smashed cars? Ugh.  Thanks for listening.

For the record, so far as we can tell Maple Leaf has no more crime than an average Seattle neighborhood.

  1. To follow-up with what happened to us, and what JS said – we took our car to be fixed at Cooks Auto, and we were told they had at least 4 other vehicles come in with similar damage later that day. According to the employee, one person ran out – at around 4am – to chase down the vandals. It was apparently teenagers with a baseball bat. The employee said this other victim called the police, but no one was caught.

Also, we used to live in Belltown – ground-central for crime in many ways – and then after that in Fremont, just off 99. My comment about being demoralized is that we never had problems in either of those (seemingly) higher-crime areas. In the 9 months we’ve been in Maple Leaf, we’ve had the break-in and the smashed car mirror. Most likely just bad luck, but I think you can see how it’s gotten us down about the ‘hood.

  2. I’ve been in the neighborhood nearly 19 years. I love it here. There is crime in every neighborhood. It’s good we all keep an eye out for each other. And staying aprised of the crime events helps us all know what to look for.

  3. This is the first time I’ve lived in a community where I’ve been so well informed about local events and local crime due mostly to reading this blog. Perhaps that’s why crime seems high?
