If you need a little more time to decide whether you’d like to participate in Solarize Seattle: Northeast, the deadline has been extended from today to next Monday, April 30.

The program, which aims to help educate homeowners about solar power and contract for less expensive installation, will remain open for an extra week because of popular demand, according to a news release.

Already, 21 Northeast Seattle residents have contracted to install solar on their homes, and nearly 300 people have registered to participate. The program, which is a partnership between nonprofits Northwest SEED and Sustainable NE Seattle, hopes that by the end of summer more than 50 Northeast Seattle homes will have solar installed through the campaign.

If you live in the 98105, 98115 or 98125 ZIP codes, you can register at www.solarizewa.org/registration. Need to learn more before signing up? There will be a workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 4805 N.E. 45th St.

  1. Well, I will be on the Unite for Women walk on Saturday so I can’t attend. On our electricity assessment the city keeps sending us they tell us we use too much electricity and even switching to flourescent bulbs has done little to reduce it. I was just curious what the cost on something like this was but there is no way way can afford anything that high or even half that much. We need a new roof, new car for commuting, pay college tuition and stuff like that first.

  2. @Susan – when we were looking at solar the average was ~40k, that was retail. As I understand it, this program can save some $$ but the cost is still prohibitively high.

  3. Every situation is different, but if you can attend the meeting and sign up, you’ll get a free solar audit and estimate for your house. We just had our panels installed last week, and we’re expecting the payback time to be around 10 years. That’s if our electricity prices stay the same, which is unlikely. This is a great program, and we have nothing but good things to report- from the initial visit to the installation- everything’s been really positive.

  4. If you’ve ever considered solar or any other sustainability/environmental upgrade for your home, get involved in this! My partner signed up for these on her home and the payback time and price are EXCELLENT!
