PCC inching closer to Maple Leaf

How many of you Maple Leafers out there have always wanted to join PCC but haven’t because the locations are too out-of-the-way?

Let the waiting begin.

Our news partner at My Green Lake says PCC is coming to the neighborhood in place of the giant pit that replaced the Vitamilk plant three years ago between Woodlawn Avenue Northeast, Northeast 71st St, Fifth Avenue Northeast, and Northeast 72nd Street:

Construction is finally moving forward at the former Vitamilk Dairy site, and the new building should be open by late 2013. …

Ground breaking at the site, now being referred to as “Green Lake Village,” is targeted for this winter, and the new PCC is scheduled to open in late 2013.

In addition to the 25,000-square-foot PCC, there will be 30,000 feet of other retail space and 295 apartments in five stories.

  1. Safeway and QFC are hardly a reasonable substitute for PCC. And why would you shop at Whole Foods, a huge national chain from Texas, with a conservative CEO publicly against universal health care and buys out small co-ops around the country (Wild Oats, Denver) when we have a great local food store founded in Seattle, PCC.

  2. I suspect when this new PCC opens, the store on 75th and Aurora will be closed.

What I question is whether 295 more apartments are needed, or can be filled. They’re still having trouble filling the units at the old Albertsons (after converting the project from condos to apartments). BUT projections show huge rent increases are in the offing for Seattle, so let the machinery of greed roll!

  3. Isn’t there a PCC on 75th and Aurora? Is there need for another one? Don’t get me wrong, I love PCC, but I feel like Maple Leaf/Roosevelt has so many grocery stores! Just going down Roosevelt you have a Safeway, QFC, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s.
