The Hive Social Club,  9220 Roosevelt Way N.E., officially opened today with the first of many Monday afternoon drop-in dress-up tea parties “for little princesses.”

“For two hours they get to play and have fun and be princesses,” says owner Melissa Plourd, a children’s entertainer and face painter who hosted similar parties for years until deciding to create a brick-and-mortar location for drop-in tea parties, party rentals and more.

At the drop-in tea party, girls get to use real china, silverware and linens, but in the style of a “Mad Hatter’s tea party for 2010,” with mismatched sets to add to the fun, and Plourd also gives the girls a mini-etiquette class.

However, The Hive does more than just offer a space that parents won’t have to clean up. Plourd also provides all of the dress-up accessories: feather boas, jewelry, wings, parasols, tutus and more, as well as more than a dozen mirrors where the girls can ooh and aah over their new look.

The private tea parties are similar, but allow the girls to be more specific about their theme, with Plourd suggesting ideas such as Princess Tea, Enchanted Fairy Tea, Ladybug Picnic Tea, Elegant Tea and Pop Star Diva Tea.

But The Hive’s tea parties aren’t just for little girls.

“It’s a party house that specializes in princess parties,” Plourd said, adding, “it’s for princesses of all ages, though.”

The setting can be ideal for bridal showers, baby showers or even company parties, she said, and The Hive also offers a couple of all-ages drop-in events, including twice-monthly henna nights and a knitting gathering that has yet to be organized.

For now, drop-in tea parties are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and from 6:30-8 p.m. Fridays, and they cost $15 per child. Private parties start at $350 for a party for 10, with plenty of options for adding more fun.

Henna nights are the second and fourth Monday of every month from 6:30-9, and participants pay a $20 fee at the door for chai tea, snacks and a henna design of their choice. For more information, call The Hive at 206-462-1192.
