Don’t let the heat keep you from enjoying the outdoors this evening.

Northgate Community Center invites you to beat the heat but still enjoy the outdoors during a nature walk from 6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight.

A naturalist from Carkeek Park will lead participants of the Family Fun Night event from the community center, located at 10510 Fifth Ave. N.E., down Northeast 105th Street to the beaver dam in Thornton Creek Park No. 6, then back to the west side of Fifth Avenue to the daylighted part of Thornton Creek that splits Thornton Place.

Northgate Community Center coordinator Patty Maxwell said the walk won’t be longer than a half-mile, making it suitable for all ages.  “It’s shaded and it’ll be nice and cool in there,” she added.

The event costs $5 per family. Also in and around Maple Leaf this weekend:

  • Northwest Hospital, located at 1550 N. 115th St., is opening its doors to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to show off the new multimillion-dollar upgrade to its surgical facilities.
  • Get to know our area police officers at the Picnic at the North Precinct from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. There will be food, music, clowns as well as the chance to learn more about the North Precinct, which is located at 10049 College Way N., just north of and across the street from North Seattle Community College.
  • Learn more about the growing “urban farming” trend from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Seattle Tilth’s City Chicken Coop Tour, a self-guided tour of 29 homes throughout the city where you can learn some of the ins and out of keeping chickens and other urban livestock.
  • Interested in checking out the condos that now are available as rentals at Thornton Place? Take a look at some of the model homes from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday during the Thornton Place Creekside open house, which also will feature light appetizers, according to its Facebook page.
